The workshop focuses on exploring electronic textiles. E-textiles are traditional textile materials integrated with electronic capabilities. In the workshop, we will make a simple textile sensor, which will be used for controlling sound.

We will start with a brief introduction to e-textiles and show examples of textile materials and electronic components that can be used for making soft circuits. We will also go through a few e-textile projects to get a glimpse of the different ways of integrating electronics into textiles.

Following the introduction, everyone will make their own sonic e-textile. We will focus on how conductive yarns can be used to create simple sensors for electronic interfacing. The afternoon will conclude with a brief discussion about the workshop outcomes and experiences.

There are materials for 10 participants, so please register to the workshop soon to ensure your place. Please note that, as the workshop is rather short, it is important that you can join for the whole duration. The workshop is also open for curious visitors to drop by and see the participants at work.

This DIY masterclass will be held in English with some German translation. No previous experience is required.

Workshop facilitators: eCrafts Collective

The eCrafts Collective are Ramyah Gowrishankar and Kati Hyyppä who joined forces in the quest for fascinating, unexpected and delightful combinations of traditional crafts and electronics. Craft knowledge is versatile and has adapted with time to the availability of resources and materials. In todays world, it is possible to think of electronics as another, additional material for crafts. Taking this idea to practice, we explore traditional textiles, patterns and crafting techniques in the spirit of open design, and organize also workshops that bring different communities together. An important aspect of the e-crafts adventures is to meet people face to face and to gain insights into local cultures, traditions and folk tales. In the course of the explorations electronics become another ingredient in the mix, and the traditional artifacts get a new twist, remaining still connected to the stories of the past.
