URLab #3 – Spontaneous City

18. February 2017 @ 10:00 - 16:00

The third Urban reconnaissance Lab will be dedicatd to the exploration of the Spontaneous City, focusing on those everyday life practices that challenge rules and normative powers. We will look for all those manifestations that appear contingent, unplanned and exist outside of formal regulations and legitimations and plans. We will reflect on which form of representation can be employed to map such phenomena in order not to threat, perturb or stigmatise their existence.

The laboratory is introduced by the public conversation “Activating Local Knowledge” on Wednesday 15 February, 7pm, when we will meet the activists of Prinzessinengarten and the Nachbarschaftakademie, to discuss the capacity of bottom-up voluntary projects to foster urban transformation.

Urban reconnaissance is a methodology developed by Ogino Knauss to disentangle the complexity of factors determining urban form and identity. It is based on a matrix of 64 different definitions of the word “city”, each one completed by a related exercise of spatial assessment. The UR toolbox is employed for a steady activity of workshop and urban explorations stressing the necessity of a holistic multidisciplinary approach for the comprehension of urban issues.

The workshop is organised in collaboration with Supermarkt and is part of the EU Erasmus plus program Mehringplatz Anknipsen.
